This annual summer lecture was initiated in 2001 by the Boston College Institute of Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry (IREPM) and has been continued by the School of Theology and Ministry (STM).聽 The lecture is named for the early 20thCentury mystic, Evelyn Underhill (1874-1941), a married laywoman in ministry.聽 She was the first woman invited to give a series of theological lectures at Oxford and the first to become a retreat leader in the Anglican Church.聽 Widely recognized for her classic text聽Mysticism, a comprehensive study of religious experience, Underhill authored numerous works on the Christian spiritual life.

Beginning in 2009, the School of Theology and Ministry hosts an annual celebration on or near the feast day of St. Mary of Magdala on July 22nd. Inspired by the role of Mary Magdalene in being the first to proclaim the news of Christ鈥檚 resurrection, this event includes a liturgical celebration as well as a lecture by a distinguished scholar on various topics highlighting the legacy of women in the Church.
