Formative Education: Mapping the Terrain

Boston College is not unique in higher education in regard to the quest for more integrative and meaningful experiences for students, and there is some evidence that these aspects of education now are receiving more attention in colleges and universities than they have are the past. Where Boston College does distinguish itself, however, is in its institutional commitment to drawing upon a 500-year old tradition of Jesuit, Catholic education to bring an unusually deep blend of experience, reflection, and action to its teaching and learning.泭 This requires students to know themselves well, to become skilled in the arts of discernment, and to undertake purposeful action to promote the public good and to become men and women for others.

To stimulate further dialogue and debate, we are inviting colleagues from across campus to participate in a conference on November 14th and 15th of this year to explore and further develop Boston Colleges shared praxis in the area of formative education.泭 We also welcome a small number of guests from other institutions in the US and abroad to inform and enrich our deliberations.
